Visiting family in Britain, attending a business meeting or travelling as a tourist can fall within the UK Standard Visitor route. Indian passport holders generally need to obtain the appropriate UK visit visa before travelling.

HOW LONG CAN A VISITOR STAY?

A Standard Visitor can usually stay for up to six months. Long-term multiple-entry visitor visas may be available for two, five or ten years, but these do not ordinarily permit continuous residence: each visit remains subject to the permitted length of stay.

PERMITTED ACTIVITIES

Visitors can generally take holidays, see relatives and friends, attend meetings and conferences, negotiate contracts and undertake certain short courses or other specified activities.

There are tightly defined exceptions for certain permitted paid engagements and professional activities.

WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED?

A visitor cannot normally take employment with a UK company, run a business as a self-employed person, claim public funds, or use repeated visits to make the UK their main home.

Ordinary visitor permission is not a substitute for a work visa. A Standard Visitor cannot use that route to marry or give notice of marriage.

DOCUMENTS AND FINANCES

Applicants must show that they are genuine visitors, intend to leave, and can afford their visit and return journey, either themselves or through eligible third-party support.

Useful evidence can include employment or business circumstances, financial documents, travel purpose and details of a host. There is no universal bank-balance amount guaranteeing approval.

APPLICATION COSTS

The Home Office currently lists a £135 application fee for a standard visit of up to six months. Check the official website for current charges and processing arrangements before submitting.

FAMILY VISITS AND MEDICAL TRAVEL

An invitation from a relative may help explain the purpose and accommodation arrangements, but it does not guarantee approval. Different rules can apply to medical treatment, academic visits and study-related visits.
